 One of three major designers and supervisors of a model of development at Jabal al-Hoss (SYR/97/004 - Community Development at Jabal al-Hoss) – the first attempt to introduce indigenous micro finance institutions in the Syrian context.

Community Development at Jabal al-Hoss has been widely acclaimed as one of the most successful poverty alleviation projects in the region and has since received a grant of $1.5 million from the Japanese Government

(an unprecedented event in the history of the UNDP office in Syria) to help fund Phase II of the project.

I was responsible for the formulation of “The Resource Mobilization Strategy - Regional Bureau for Arab States” (October-November 1997).

I participated in a large number of training workshops on issues related to the preparation, execution and implementation of development programs.

I contributed substantive inputs and managerial supervision to the following thematic areas: Poverty Alleviation (Syria's 1st attempt to prepare a poverty strategy);

Human Development (Syria’s first National Human Development Report); Technical and Vocational Education (National Strategy); and Public and Private Sector Reform (Management Development Program)

February 1998

During Mr. Kofi Annan’s visit to Syria (February 1998), I had the pleasure to meet him and I was selected to speak in his presence on behalf of all UN staff in Syria. After my speech, I introduced myself to Mr. Annan and I told him that we have two things in common. He asked me what they were? I responded that first we both worked for the UN and, second, we both are alumni of Macalester College. He was very surprised to hear this and so was his wife. He then asked his photographer to take pictures of us.

Over the period, April 2001 – July 2004, I undertook 14 consultancies, of which eight were carried out for the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), and six for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The vast majority of my consultancies dealt with credit and microfinance. I have had the honor to work with Dr. Hans Dieter Seibel on matters related to microfinance and I consider him my mentor in this regard. Together, we worked to design and develop a microfinance project (Community Development at Jabal al-Hoss) in northeast Syria. It has since become well known for its innovative spirit and unprecedented success in instilling self reliance and generating economic growth.

Beyond August 2004

After  becoming a full time professor at NYIT Jordan, my capacity to undertake consultancies has become extremely limited. I do, however, remain actively interested in the field of microfinance,

especially as regards its capacity to generate an economic renewal in the rural Middle East.
